Additional Yes I Can Magic Program Information

Yes I Can Resource Material

Believing in ourselves and being successful is essential for us as individuals and in society. But how do we get to that point? It starts with us as parents and what goes on in the home. In addition to extending unconditional love to our children, we must model for them how to properly handle typical everyday situations and deal with the obstacles we all will face. This helps instill confidence.

However, we face many challenges in the world that we live in. Just look around at the things that can erode our children's self-esteem. We're bombarded with constant messages in the media about how beauty and greed matter more than hard work and integrity. Unfortunately, parents aren't spending enough quality time with their children and don't monitor their activities. As a result, children lack essential life skills and, more importantly, self-worth. As a society, we have our work cut out for us. We can succeed, but it will take a concerted effort between the home and the school. Learn about our Yes I Can Magic Program.

Here are some ways to reinforce goal-setting with your students after the show:

A Goal Demonstration

  • When your students are back in their classrooms, have them get into a circle along with their teacher. Introduce a beanbag by having the teacher call out someone's name, toss it to them, and ask them how they feel today. Then have that student call out another student's name, toss it to them, and the student who threw the beanbag will ask them how that person feels. This will continue until everyone can call out a name, toss the beanbag and express how they feel. Don't let the students know until the end that you are timing how long it took to reach out to every student.
  • Once completed, let the students know the time and ask if they can do it again, but more quickly the second time. Offer it as a challenge so they will say "yes" and repeat.

What is a Goal?

Define what a goal is and what it means. For example, we think we can pass the beanbag to everyone in the classroom in ___ minutes.

Goal Setting Steps

Discuss the steps involved in setting and achieving a goal:

  • Define what you want to accomplish.
  • Determine how you plan to meet the goal.
  • Set up a plan of action.
  • Think about the benefits of reaching the goal.
  • Track and evaluate your progress along the way.

Why are Setting Goals Important?

  • Discuss why setting goals is essential and what they can do for themselves and others.
  • Talk about the advantages of goal setting. For example, how can it improve your self-confidence? How does it affect your drive and motivation? Does having a goal want to make you set different goals?
