1. What type of wax, wick, and fragrance do we use?
Harvest Sunset Candles are made with 100% soy wax and contain no paraffin or other waxes. We use quality cotton wicks and premium, phthalate-free fragrance oils.

2. What makes our wax and fragrances special?
Our candles are made exclusively with soy wax, a plant-based wax derived from soybean oil. We pair our soy wax with carefully selected premium fragrance oils to create candles that offer both quality and lasting fragrance.
Because we work in small batches, we can give careful attention to the pouring, scenting, and finishing of our candles.
3. Is the wax a blend? Does it contain paraffin?
No. Our candles are made with 100% soy wax. We do not blend our soy wax with paraffin or any other type of wax.
Because our candles contain no paraffin, there is no paraffin quality or grade to consider.
4. What determines a candle's burn time?
Several factors influence how long a candle will burn, including the size of the candle, wick, wax, room conditions, and how the candle is maintained.
Proper candle care is especially important. Soy wax has what is commonly referred to as a melt-pool memory. During the first burn, allow the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the container before extinguishing the candle. This helps promote a more even burn during future uses and reduces tunneling.
Keeping the wick trimmed to approximately ¼ inch before each burn also helps maintain a controlled flame and proper burn.
5. How are our candles scented?
Our premium fragrance oils are thoroughly incorporated into the soy wax during the candle-making process. This means the candle is scented throughout, rather than having fragrance applied only to the top or surface.
This helps provide fragrance throughout the candle's life when it is burned and properly maintained.
6. What is fragrance throw?
Cold throw refers to the fragrance you smell when the candle is unlit, while hot throw refers to the fragrance released as the candle burns and the wax develops a melt pool.
Our candles are formulated to provide an enjoyable fragrance experience both cold and while burning. The strength of the fragrance in a room can vary depending on the individual scent, candle size, room size, airflow, and other environmental conditions.
Rather than imitating national candle brands, Harvest Sunset Candles offer something different: 100% soy wax candles hand-poured in small batches on an Illinois family farm, using premium, phthalate-free fragrance oils.
7. What should you expect from the fragrance when the candle is unlit versus burning?
When unlit, you'll experience the candle's cold throw—the fragrance naturally released from the wax. This gives you an introduction to the scent and its fragrance notes.
Once lit, the melted wax releases the hot throw. As the melt pool develops, the fragrance disperses throughout the surrounding area, allowing the fragrance's different notes to come to life.
8. How clean is the burn?
Soy wax is a plant-based wax and is known for its clean-burning qualities when paired with an appropriately sized wick and proper candle care.
Occasional soot can occur with virtually any candle, particularly when a wick becomes too long, the flame is exposed to drafts, or the candle is not maintained properly. Keeping the wick trimmed to approximately ¼ inch helps control the flame and minimize smoking and soot.
If soot appears inside the jar, allow the candle and jar to cool completely before gently wiping it away.
9. Why does soy wax sometimes look different?
Because soy wax is a natural product, its appearance can change.
Frosting or blooming: You may notice a white, crystalline appearance on the wax. This natural process, called crystallization, is common with soy wax and does not affect the candle's performance or fragrance.
Oil on the surface: Soy wax may occasionally release small amounts of fragrance oil, particularly when exposed to significant temperature changes, such as during shipping. This does not necessarily indicate a problem with the candle and will often diminish after the candle is burned.
These natural variations are part of the character of a 100% soy wax candle.
Candle Care & Safety
For the best performance and enjoyment from your Harvest Sunset Candle:
- Trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch before each burn.
- On the first burn, allow the wax to melt near the edges of the container to help form an even melt pool.
- Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, but avoid drafts and strong airflow, which can cause an uneven or excessively large flame.
- Always place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep the wax pool free from wick trimmings, matches, and other debris.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep burning candles away from children and pets.
- Never burn a candle on or near anything that could catch fire.
- Never touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is hot.
- Discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains in the bottom of the container.
After Your Candle Is Finished
One of the added benefits of soy wax is easy cleanup. After the candle has finished burning and the container has completely cooled, residual soy wax can generally be cleaned from the jar with warm, soapy water, making it easy to repurpose the container.
